WHAT IS THE FPTA?

The Florida Public Telecommunications Association (FPTA) serves the industry as the state-wide legal, regulatory and legislative ADVOCATE for payphone service providers and other public telecommunications providers.

FPTA's strong and proactive involvement has yielded dramatic results as the Association has initiated or intervened in every major legal, regulatory and legislative decision affecting the public telecommunications industry in Florida since the authorization of competition in 1984.

WHAT ARE SOME SUCCESSES?

Some concrete accomplishments of the Association include:

  • Participation in the drafting of competitive ground rules, resulting in strong legislative protections against anticompetitive behavior.
  • Significant downward rate revisions for services needed from local exchange providers.
  • Securing international call blocking ordered by the FPSC to prevent fraud. This system also served as a model for the current FCC plan.
  • Elimination of Touch-Tone, Billed Number Screening and Operator Line Screening charges in BellSouth Service Territory.
  • Obtaining the nation's first intrastate dial-around compensation on all 10XXX, 800, 950 and other access code calls.

Securing passage of the 1995 Telecommunications bill eliminating mandatory Local Measured Service (LMS), allowing PSPs to subscribe to a flat B-1 rate.

Obtaining legislative mandate which eliminates per phone occupational license charges by counties and municipalities.

WHAT ARE SOME TANGIBLE BENEFITS?

FPTA conducts three meetings each year at various locations state-wide. These meetings afford members the opportunity to exchange information on policy changes, new requirements, and critical issues involving regulatory and legislative bodies, local exchange companies, and state and local government.

The Association meetings also serve as a forum for discussions on equipment innovations and new service options so that members are kept in the forefront of technology and on the leading edge of competition.

FPTA provides updates and industry alerts to members to keep you informed of important issues that might affect you. As a PSP member of the FPTA you receive a complimentary subscription to Perspectives magazine. This is a nationally distributed magazine produced by the American Public Communications Council (APCC). FPTA publishes state updates and information so you can keep informed on Florida’s and other states’ latest topics.

FPTA is a member of the APCC state association partnership program for PSP’s. Some of the benefits of APCC membership include:

  • Reduced rates for industry trade shows,
  • Reduced processing charges for state and federal dial-around compensation program.
